Our
History
Elderine Wyrick is the founder and director of Master's Academy. This is
her story.
Dean and I learned that our two sons had specific learning disabilities
after they were tested at Scottish Rite
Hospital in Dallas. This began a long and determined search to acquire
the best education possible to meet their special needs. With the help
of concerned teachers and altered curriculum, both boys progressed
steadily each year. However, as the junior high and high school years
began to pass, we became increasingly aware of their inability to
function in a normal work setting. We knew we had to do more
for them.
In 1987, I resigned my position of high school vice-principal at a local
Christian school and began to home school both boys. I re-taught the
basics in language, reading, handwriting and math as well as continued
their studies in history, science and Bible. We began to see both
students grow academically. In the spring of 1988, a vision was birthed -
a vision for a Christian school to meet the needs of students with
learning differences. It would be a school where my children could
receive their education in a school setting.

Sixteen students began their experience with Master's in my living room.
The School moved to the Haswell House in December of that first year,
and we ended the year with twenty-six students. A home setting was (and
still is) part of the vision for Master's. The warm homey atmosphere
encourages a close caring and nurturing setting.
We moved to Calvary Baptist in Desoto for two years and then to Oak
Cliff Assembly of God. Our present location is at Bread of Life Family
Church in Duncanville. God has been faithful to us, and both of my sons
are Master's Academy graduates who have gone on to earn bachelor
degrees.
God has made each student unique. The individual differences in learning
are what Master's Academy is all about. We teach individual students --
not just curriculum.
